On iPhone and iPad, a video you download in Safari or Chrome does not appear in the Photos app straight away. It is saved in the Files app first, which surprises a lot of people and makes it look as if the download failed. Here is exactly where to look, how to move the video to your camera roll, and how to change where downloads go.
Why downloads go to Files and not Photos
Since iOS 13, Safari has had a built-in download manager. Anything you download, whether it is a PDF, a ZIP file or a video, is stored in a Downloads folder in the Files app. Apple keeps browser downloads separate from your photo library so that random files never end up mixed with your pictures. Moving a video to Photos is one extra tap.
Find the download
- After the download finishes, tap the small download arrow in Safari’s address bar to see recent downloads, then tap the file.
- Or open the Files app, tap Browse, then On My iPhone (or iCloud Drive), then Downloads.
- Still not there? Use the search bar at the top of the Files app and type part of the video’s name.
Apple’s own guide, Find files on your iPhone or iPad, shows the same steps with screenshots.
Move the video to Photos
- Open the video in the Files app.
- Tap the Share icon in the bottom-left corner.
- Choose Save Video. The video now appears in your camera roll and in Recents.
Once it is in Photos, you can delete the copy in Files to free up space.
Change where Safari saves files
Go to Settings → Apps → Safari → Downloads (on older iOS versions, Settings → Safari → Downloads) and choose iCloud Drive, On My iPhone or another folder.
- On My iPhone is faster for large videos and does not use iCloud storage.
- iCloud Drive makes the file available on your other Apple devices, but it uploads first, which can be slow on mobile data.
Using Chrome or another browser on iPhone
Chrome shows a bar at the bottom after the download. Tap Open in… and choose Save Video, or save it to Files and follow the steps above. Firefox and Edge behave the same way.
Troubleshooting
- “Save Video” is missing from the Share menu: the file may not be a video format iPhone recognises. Downloads from our tool are MP4 or MP3; MP3 files can be played in Files but cannot be saved to Photos, because Photos only stores pictures and videos.
- The download stopped halfway: keep Safari open and the screen on until it finishes, especially on mobile data.
- Not enough storage: check Settings → General → iPhone Storage.
